World of Warcraft Classic continues to excite and entertain longtime WoW fans, especially with all the new content introduced in the game’s latest expansion, Season of Discovery. One of the most exciting additions is the Rune system, which allows players to unlock new abilities. In this guide, we’ll focus on Mage Runes, exploring how they work, where to find them, and which ones are currently available in Season of Discovery.
In this guide, we’ll give you a rundown on specifically Mage Runes – what they are, where you can find them, and which ones are currently in the game as of Phase 6 of Season of Discovery. Phase 7 is right around the corner, and this guide is designed to help our Mage brethren to be prepared as possible for whatever that new chapter brings.

What are Mage Runes?
Runes are a new feature introduced in World of Warcraft: Season of Discovery Phase 1 that allows players to imbue themselves with all kinds of new powers, spells, and abilities. Each Rune is unique and can only be applied to a specific armor/equipment part through a process called Rune Engraving.
As for Mage Runes, these are Runes that apply specifically to WoW’s powerful spellcasting class. Mage Runes are not useful for other classes.
Where to Find Mage Runes
When Season of Discovery launched with Phase 1 and up until Phase 6 launched in December 2024 – the process of acquiring Mage Runes was… let’s say time-consuming. Others might say it was a pain in the ass.
There were level requirements, quests, and lots of trekking back and forth through Azeroth for each Rune. Thankfully, Blizzard came to their senses and started to respect players’ time more by making Rune collection infinitely simpler. Now, all you have to do is find NPC vendors called Rune Brokers, and you can purchase whatever Runes you like for 1 copper each. Rune Brokers can be found in each major city, and they’re pretty easy to spot as well – just keep an eye out for the purple weirdos with glowing eyes.

- Darnassus – Temple Gardens (28.5, 38.4)
- Dun Morogh – Coldridge Valley (29.5, 72.1)
- Durotar – Valley of Trials (42.7, 68.0)
- Elwynn Forest – Northshire Valley (48.2, 41.5)
- Ironforge – The Forlorn Cavern (53.9, 14.0)
- Mulgore – Camp Narache (44.3, 76.7)
- Orgrimmar – The Cleft of Shadow (49.5, 46.0)
- Stormwind City – The Dwarven District (57.6, 27.0)
- Teldrassil – Shadowglen (58.9, 43.7)
- Thunder Bluff – The Spirit Rise (22.7, 12.6)
- Tirisfal Glades – Deathknell (31.4, 66.4)
- Undercity – The Magic Quarter (79.1, 20.0)
You can purchase and use any Rune starting from Level 1 now, so save up some copper and get ready to reach your true potential.
All Mage Runes

Head Runes
- Advanced Warding – Increases magnitude of Mana Shield, Frost Ward, and Fire Ward by 100%; decreases mana drained by Mana Shield by 50% for all damage done
- Deep Freeze – Stuns target for 5 sec.; only works on Frozen targets
- Hot Streak – Pyroblast spells cost 100% less mana after 2 successful crits with similar spells
- Temporal Anomaly – Launches orb of temporal energy; grants allies shield every 2 sec.
Back Runes
- Arcane Barrage – Launches missiles at target for Arcane damage; 25% chance to trigger Missile Barrage
- Overheat – Fire Blast will always crit; can be cast simultaneously with other spells
- Frozen Orb – Launches orb of ice that moves forward for 16 sec.; does Frost Damage and applies Chill
Chest Runes
- Burnout – Increases spell crit chance by 15%; additional mana cost of 1% base mana
- Enlightenment – Deal 10% more damage while Mana remains above 70%
- Fingers of Frost – Chill gets a 25% chance to grant Fingers of Frost; treats next two spell targets as Frozen
- Regeneration – Heals target; applies Temporal Beacon for 30 sec.
Wrist Runes
- Balefire Bolt – Unleash raw magic that does Chimeric Damage
- Displacement – Teleport back to last cast of Blink; reset Blink cooldown
- Molten Armor – Causes Fire damage; increases spell crit chance by 5%
- Rewind Time – Target with Temporal Beacon instantly heals all damage taken in last 5 secs
Hand Runes
- Arcane Blast – Blasts target with Arcane Damage; damage and healing effects of all Arcane spells are increased by 15% with each cast
- Ice Lance – Deals Frost Damage to target; causes 400% damage to Frozen targets
- Living Bomb – Target becomes Living Bomb, taking Fire Damage for 12 secs.; Target explodes after that time
Leg Runes
- Arcane Surge – Unleash all remaining Mana at target to deal Arcane damage; increased by up to 300% based on amount of Mana remaining
- Icy Veins – Increases spellcasting by 20% and reduces pushback from damaging attacks by 100% for 20 secs.
- Living Flame – Summons spellfire flame that moves toward target; leaves trail of spellfire for 10 secs.
- Mass Regeneration – Heals all allies and applies Temporal Beacon to each target for 15 secs.
