    To understand when WoW might shut down, the best place to look is the current state of the game… Which is surprisingly, still pretty good. 

    According to mmo-population.com, WoW is still the most played MMO on the market. Boasting an impressive total player count of 155.12 million, and a daily active player count above 300,000.

    But this player base should come as no surprise. Blizzard have continued to release updates over the past two decades, keeping players engaged even when they find themselves in WoW waiting on another update. The most recent of which were released in 2022 (Dragonflight) and 2024 (The War Within). 

    Perhaps more importantly, these updates are not only frequent, but they are consistently very meaningful. Adding new mechanics, items and content to the game while extending WoW’s complex and beloved narrative. Not to mention WoW spin-offs like WoW Classic, which allow players to relive the game’s origins and enjoy a nostalgic experience.

    Part of this health can be chocked up to the fact that WoW still features subscription payments – bringing in huge sums of money which fund the development of expansion, real-world events and much more.

    As the most disruptive dive tank in the game, Winston is great if you’re running dive. Offering the opportunity to jump the enemy support and power down squishies.

    • Sigma

    When you think of shield tanks, you probably think of Reinhardt. But you should be thinking of Sigma. His shields are versatile and reactive, providing excellent support, even from a distance. Meanwhile, his primary fire delivers strong poke damage at range. 

    • Sojourn

    Offering high burst damage and excellent mobility, Sojourn is always a threat, especially with her one-shot potential. While her fast-paced playstyle takes some practice to learn, it’s definitely worth it.

    • Ashe

    Ashe is highly effective at dealing damage, especially with a Mercy pocket. One of her best tools is her ultimate, B.O.B., who is ideal for contesting points in a pinch and creating a completely different angle of attack.

    • Cassidy

    One of the most reliable damage dealers in the game, Cassidy’s playstyle is simple but incredibly effective. If you can click heads, you’ll quickly dominate lobbies as him.

    • Genji

    Genji’s greatest asset is his agility, offering the ability to quickly switch between fighting in the front and back lines. Not to mention his ultimate, dragonblade, remains one of the best in the game.

    • Kiriko

    Agile and capable of high healing output, Kiriko brings game-changing utility through her Suzu. She fits well into most compositions, keeping up with dive and providing strong forward momentum for ball comps, especially with her ultimate.

    • Junkrat

    Offering the highest dps in the game, Junkrat is great for punishing teams holding any position thanks to his endless high-damage spam. Not only that but he can become an impressively agile character when you get used to his mine-jump.

    • Lúcio

    One of the most controversial supports, Lucio is actually incredibly powerful in the right hands. Speed boost is his greatest asset, offering a surefire way for your team to overwhelm the enemies by moving your tanks and damage into close quarters. Good lucio players are also incredibly good at punishing straggling supports.

    • Zenyatta

    Zenyatta might provide the highest damage potential in the game, primarily through his Discord Orb. This ability lets a focused team quickly eliminate opponents, especially tanks, by concentrating their attacks. However, Zenyatta depends heavily on team coordination, which can make him challenging to use effectively in lower ranks. On the bright side, Zenyatta has some of the most visually stunning skins, adding style to his gameplay.

    • Hazard

    The newest hero, many players are still getting to grips with Hazard’s unusual tool kit. But his area control and utility make him incredibly powerful in the right hands.

    B-Tier 

    These heroes can be game-changers, but only in the right conditions. With many of them falling out of A-tier purely because of the domination of hitscans.

    • Reinhardt

    Reliable Reinhardt is great at defending your team when they stick together in a ball, meaning they stay close as a tight group. However, this playstyle can be rare in the current meta, often leaving Reinhardt isolated and reducing his effectiveness.

    • Mauga 

    The consistent pressure of Mauga’s miniguns can be oppressive to the enemy, his lack of mobility and utility mean he needs a support locked in on him, while failing to truly provide support to damage dealers.

    • Mei

    If you need to control a point, Mei can be an asset. Her ability to slow enemies, punish those out of position, and totally lock down an area is unmatched. However, she can really struggle on certain maps with long site lines as hitscan heroes continue to dominate.

    • Baptiste

    With incredibly high healing output and some game-changing utility, Baptiste is a good pick when your team is clustered together. However, if your team is prone to splitting, you’ll likely want to switch.

    • Echo

    Offering strong damage potential, Echo is a versatile DPS whose ultimate can completely turn the tide of battle.     • Doomfist

    With high mobility and one of the most dynamic tank playstyles, Doomfist is a notoriously challenging hero to play effectively. In skilled hands, he can dominate matches, but only a small percentage of players can truly make him shine.

    • Ramattra

    Offering up a good balance of offense and defence, Ramattra can be a powerful pick. However he is vulnerable to dive given his relative lack of mobility.

    • Zarya

    With the potential of being the highest damage dealers of all tanks, Zarya is a powerful pick. Her ultimate is also a great enabler with team-wipe potential. However, she can be difficult to play at higher ranks, where players are more careful to not let her get charged.

    • Reaper

    Perhaps the best tank buster in the game, Reaper can dominate in low-ranking lobbies. However, the current domination of ranged heroes makes him struggle against higher ranks. 

    • Hanzo

    With burst damage and one-shot potential, Hanzo can be oppressive. However, he is often less reliable than Widow, Ashe and Sojourn. Making him a less viable sniper pick.

    • Soldier: 76

    If Soldier 76 is anything, it’s consistent. Offering strong sustained and burst damage, self-heal and decent mobility he is an all-rounder. But that is also his downfall, as other heroes simply fit better into specific comps.

    • Torbjörn

    Torbjörn’s turret provides valuable utility, especially when positioned at an off-angle. While it can be a game-changer in specific situations, Torbjörn is often outclassed by other damage heroes in most scenarios.

    • Pharah

    With the ability to deal impressive damage, Pharah remains a significant threat, especially when paired with a Mercy pocket (a Mercy player who consistently boosts Pharah’s damage and heals her). However, her effectiveness in the current meta is limited due to the dominance of hitscan heroes.

    • Illari

    Offering strong healing while holding a point, Illari has her uses. But her utility is simply very limited compared to other supports. Making Ana almost objectively just an upgraded version of Illari.

    • Venture

    While Venture can easily jump in and out of combat causing some disruption, she lacks consistent damage output. Making her viable only in the right hands.

    C-Tier 

    This tier of hero is generally outclassed in the current meta. Meaning they can thrive in very certain circumstances, but generally are better swapped out for other picks.

    • Roadhog

    Somewhat a DPS in disguise, Roadhog really struggles with surviving in the current meta. Not only that, but he barely provides any support to his teammates making him an odd pick for a solo tank.

    • Wrecking Ball

    The great disruptor, Hammond can be a powerful pick in the right hands. However, playing him right requires some serious coordination, as it usually requires you to leave your team almost entirely unguarded.

    • Junker Queen

    While Junker Queen is one of the strongest self-sustaining tanks out there, who can win almost any 1-1 brawl, her tanking utility is among the weakest. Meaning you will not see much of her in competitive play.

    • Symmetra

    With some of the highest sustained damage potential in her category, Symmetra is a powerful pick in the right circumstances, such as holding choke points or countering shields. However, she struggles at range and is vulnerable in most 1v1 situations.

    • Mercy

    If you’re looking for a pure healer, Mercy isn’t the best option in the current meta. However, as a support hero, she excels at boosting damage, enabling powerful heroes like Widowmaker, Ashe, and Pharah to land more reliable one-shots.

    For this reason, Mercy can be an asset in some comps and a total waste of a pick in others.

    • Sombra

    With inconsistent damage and frequent absence from the front line, Sombra needs serious coordination to play right. Making her difficult to play effectively with randoms.

    D-Tier

    These heroes really struggle to be game changers in the current competitive meta, offering less than the many other heroes on this Overwatch 2 tier list.

    • Moira

    Although she has strong solo survivability and incredibly high healing potential for ball comps, Moira struggles in the current meta as she doesn’t offer much utility beyond healing, putting her  behind other healing supports.

    • Bastion

    While Bastion can deal significant damage, his low mobility and large hitbox make him an easy target compared to most other heroes in the game.

    • Lifeweaver

    Lifeweaver boasts one of the most unique and versatile kits in the game, but his abilities often lack impactful utility. To make matters worse, his survivability is poor against dive and ranged heroes, making him an easy target for the dominant DPS in the current meta.

    Choosing Your Hero

    Every hero has their time and place, with all heroes in the game being viable at every level of competitive play under the right circumstances.

    However, if you’re looking for a new hero to main, you’re best off choosing any hero in S or A tier of this Overwatch 2 tier list. These heroes are reliable almost independently to your overall team comp. Meaning you can have a great impact on team fights without needing high levels of coordination.
